Reflection of Artist Talk 1—Valaria Tatera

In Valaria Tatera’s works, I felt something meaningful in my life. I like her concept of making her works, which is to hold personal space for the individuals who are often erased. She talked about her family’s experience. We can know that some of her works are made about her family. I like “Good to the Last Drop: Saving Ourselves” the most. In my perspective, this work shows us the last resources in our earth, also can show us the last worth in our minds. “Saving Ourselves” can be understood as both saving our “lives” in physically and in psychologically.

“The past went that-a-way. When faced with a totally new situation, we tend always to attach ourselves to the objects, to the flavor of the most recent past.” (McLuhan 74) We often think back to the past. When we think back to the past, we will think about the past with out current ideas, our thinking will continue to improve, and our views on the past will also continue to improve. Therefore, at these times, it is a very important and meaningful think to make these ideas into works and preserve them for the public to appreciate and think about.

Valaria Tatera talked about her family, which had a great influence on her works. I can feel her thirst for justice in those hundreds of ribbons. After listening to her great-grandfather’s story, you will feel even more different when you go to see her works. At the same time, I also can feel the connection to women and girl’s spirit. So, when artists are creating, they sometimes need some reflections on the past, thoughts about the future and meaning to the present.

Same! The red ribbons made me awestruck, and also sad. It's so impressive connecting viewers' emotions.
